75 Hard Challenge Rules + Know Your Preferred Pace

If you have started 75 Hard and quit before, that does not make you someone who cannot stick to things. The version you tried probably did not fit your life, and nobody told you there was another way in.
This guide covers the 75 hard challenge rules in plain words, why so many people stop around week two or three, and how to start today with a short understanding of your pace. You will also find a way to pick the version you can keep, from hard to soft to fully custom, and a script for what to do when you miss a day.
The 75 hard challenge rules in plain words
75 Hard is a program created by entrepreneur Andy Frisella. You follow the same set of daily tasks for 75 days in a row. These are the five rules the program asks for:
- Follow a diet. You pick a diet and stick to it, with no cheat meals and no alcohol.
- Work out twice a day. Two workouts of 45 minutes each, and one of them has to be outdoors.
- Drink a gallon of water. Every day.
- Read 10 pages. From a nonfiction book, not an audiobook.
- Take a progress photo. Every day.
The big catch is the reset rule. If you miss any task on any day, the program says you go back to day one. That single rule is why 75 Hard feels so intense, and it is also why so many people stop for good after one slip.
What the 75 Hard rules ask in real life
The rules were not written with a real life schedule, cycle or recovery in mind, so a few honest notes are worth knowing before you start.
Two workouts a day is a lot. Rest is where your body repairs and adjusts, and the original rules do not build any in. If you are new to training, coming back from a break or dealing with an injury, two long sessions every day may be more than your body needs.
A strict diet with no flexibility can backfire. Rigid food rules work for some people. For others they turn eating into a pass or fail test. Health outlets such as Cleveland Clinic and Women's Health have both pointed out that the strictness of 75 Hard can be hard on some people, and that gentler options exist.
Life happens to your week. Work, family, travel, your period and bad sleep are all real. A plan that resets you to zero for any of them is a plan that is easy to quit.
A quick safety note: If you are pregnant, recovering from an injury, managing a health condition, or have a history of disordered eating, talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian before starting any strict program. This article is general information and not medical advice.
You can still do 75 Hard if you want to. You get to choose how you do it, and the choice is yours to make.
Why most people quit 75 Hard around week two or three
The first few days run on excitement. Around week two or three the excitement fades, and the rules are still there. Here are the most common reasons people stop, with a fix for each.
- The workouts take too much time. Fix: shorten them to a length you can repeat on your busiest day.
- One missed task wipes out all your progress. Fix: choose a version with a same day restart instead of a full reset.
- The diet feels too strict. Fix: pick a simple food habit you enjoy, like adding protein or vegetables to each meal, rather than a list of banned foods.
- You are tired. Fix: protect your sleep first. It makes every other habit easier.
- It stops feeling like yours. Fix: swap in habits that matter to you, within a limit of seven.
Every fix here is about fit. You can keep the person you already are and choose a plan that matches her.
Pick your hard: hard, medium, soft or custom
Taking care of yourself takes effort, and so does staying stuck where you are. Both are hard in their own way. The point is to choose the hard you can keep. In Peak Glow Club, we've designed the 75 challenge with this in mind, you choose from four styles, with a maximum of seven habits to track.
Hard
Hard follows the strict spirit of the original rules, with daily tasks and no wiggle room. Pick this if you thrive on firm rules and you are in good health.
Medium
Medium keeps the structure and adds a bit of flexibility, like a rest day or a shorter workout on busy days. Pick this if you want a challenge that bends a little when life does.
Soft
Soft focuses on a few gentle, doable habits that you can keep through a messy week. If you have quit before, this is a great place to build trust with yourself.
Custom
Custom lets you choose your own habits, up to seven. You might pick a daily walk, water, a few pages of a book, a skincare routine and a bedtime. Pick the seven that move your life forward. If you want a place to start, see our guide to the habits that make the biggest difference.
Your first step: choose one version today and stick with it for the first week before you decide whether to change it.
Choose your style
Pick the pace that fits your season. You can fine-tune the habits next.
What to do when you miss a day
You will probably miss a day at some point. That is part of any long challenge and it does not erase the days you already completed.
Here is a simple restart script you can use the same day:
- Pause the story. Skip "I always quit" and say "I missed a day."
- Name the reason. Tired, busy, sick, travelling? Write it down in one line.
- Make tomorrow smaller. Pick the smallest version of each habit and do that.
- Start again today if you can. Even one habit counts. Do the easiest one right now.
- Check in. Logging that you showed up is what builds your streak back.
Getting back on track fast matters more than having a perfect record. A restart that takes five minutes beats a plan that takes a week to forgive yourself.
